Process

Using Photoshop, I uploaded the intended picture and began to edit. I wanted the eye to have some distortion to it. Therefore I wanted my editing to be random to help get this effect. A good tool in photoshop to use to achieve a distorted effect is the Content Aware feature. When deleting a section of the photo it replaces the space with similar content that is in the rest of the picture. This feature comes with some drawbacks- for it is not always accurate. I learned it creates a distorted effect. In order to create the effect I was going for I used the quick selection tool to select specific parts of the image. I then went to the "Fill" tab and chose to delete the selected section and replace it with "Content Aware". This filled in the space with content similar to the rest of the image. I continued this process until I got the distorted effect I was trying to achieve. I wanted to also incorporate the color blue more. Therefore, I added a frame to the image. I did this by increasing the canvas side on each side equally. I then chose a shade of blue that complimented the eye and filled in the frame using the "fill" function.

Experimentation
In order to select what ares I wanted to alter, I started by using the lasso tools. I experimented with using them but I found it difficult to select areas this way. Instead, I switched to using the quick selection tool. I found it much easier and faster to select in this fashion. It quickly selected parts of the image automatically. I then experimented with how the selected sections were to be filled. I started off by just using certain sections and placing them over sections I wanted to cover. I did this by using the select tool and then using the free transform function. I then was able to drag the separate layers around the canvas and adjust their sizes. However, I was all the way happy with the results of this method (looked choppy and not fluid) so I moved on to using the "content-aware" function. The last form of experimentation I used was adding a frame around the image. I wanted the color of the frame to compliment the iris for a sense of unity. I used the dropper tool to identify the colors within the iris of the eye. I was expecting the color to have a blue tone to it but however the color I got was more of a muddy green. Disappointed with the color I began to choose colors that were not within the image to use as a frame color.
Reflection
This digital image was inspired by The False Mirror by Rene Magritte and The Eye by Salvador Dali. I took inspiration from these two pieces due to the subject of the paintings being an eye. Rene inspired me to base my project on a human eye and use the symbolism to convey meaning. Salvador Dali inspired me to add distortion to portray chaos and confusion. Thru this I understood the symbolism of what an eye can portray. Eyes are the window to the soul and hold a lot of connection upon viewing. The messages I tried to convey in this piece was how one can perceive life and I removed the iris to convey a lack of vision and direction.
